Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26 - Aegina Island, Greece

It's been an emotional couple of days for me as I had my wallet (which had my passport, money, debit card, and credit card in it) stolen from my purse when I was in downtown Athens shopping at H&M.  I had to file a police report (oh, that was a strange and freaking place!) and talk with the American Embassy at length.  My cards were cancelled and my Fulbright travelmates and friends were helpful, caring, and giving.  It's just been a really hard couple of days dealing with it all - the emotional rollercoaster was a bit shocking to my system to be honest.  The good news is that everything is and will work out and I was not physically hurt.

The wallet incident happened on Friday night and on Saturday morning we headed to the island of Aegina which is about a 45 minute ferry ride from the Athens port.  It's not a fancy island known for gorgeous beaches like some of the Aeegan Island, but it's been a place of quiet, rest, and rejuvenation for all of us.  We got in Saturday morning and spent a very, very hot afternoon walking around to the anicent ruins on the island, and then after our seaside lunch, we were "set free" until 6:00 pm on Sunday evening when we have an educational program.  I enjoyed a little time on the beach and took a quick swim in the Aeegan Sea and then enjoyed a dinner of pizza with some of my new friends.  Then I took advantage of having the first unscheduled morning since arriving in New York just over two weeks ago and I slept it. I needed it, I guess, because I slept for 12 hours!

Now today, Sunday, I have enjoyed a leisurely time of reading on the beach, was treated to lunch by a new friend (Kay, from California), and then some more reading on the beach.  Now I am sitting on the hotel patio that faces the sea and updating my faithful blog followers while enjoying the breeze and shade.  I am a blessed, blessed woman.

Tomorrow morning we head back to Athens.  The group is going to be going to the Greece Fulbright office for our last afternoon in Greece before flying out to Turkey on Tuesday morning - but I will be escorted to the American Embassy and hopefully everything with my American passport will be taken care of easily and quickly so I too can fly out Tuesday morning.  I may not post tomorrow, so the next time you will hear from me, I will (hopefully) be in Ankara, Turkey starting our next leg this amazing adventure.

It sounds like you have come to a place in your journey to reflect, refresh, and rejoice. Again, love your pictures. You look like a Greek goddess in your beautiful blue dress in the pictures! Could the sky be a more brilliant blue? Thanks again for taking the time for the updates - we have been anxiously awaiting good news about your theft! Safe travels to Turkey.

Thank God your camera wasn't stolen! The pictures are absolutely gorgeous. You look amazing - a perfect color for that picture. So glad you had some down time on this trip. Why doesn't the fact that you slept during your free-time surprise me?

Much love to you both, Sandy and Patty! Yes...I am grateful my camera wasn't stolen either! I've bought a ring that has a blue jewel in the middle to remind me of the brillant shades of blues and greens in Greece. Thanks of the compliements on the dress. This is what I was buying when my wallet (and passport) was stolen. I had just paid for the dress and put the wallet in my purse, but hadn't zipped it because I was waiting for my receipt. I think they took it while I signed because it's the only moment when it wasn't on the front of my hip. I didn't realize it was gone immediately because I decided to put the receipt in the bag instead of my hip purse and wallet slot. Sigh. I made myself wear the dress the next day (Saturday) but I think I will always hate it in a way. It'll be the "if-only" dress. Sigh.
